How To Get Indian Air Force Jobs For Women

Interested in Indian Air Force careers for women? Learn about jobs for women in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and how to get Indian Air Force jobs.

Ever since India's first woman pilot, Sarla Thukral, earned an aviation pilot license in 1936 at the age of 21, and took her first solo flight in a Gypsy Moth wearing a traditional saree, Indian women have aspired to take to the skies.

Today inspiring young women like India's youngest commercial pilot, 19-year-old Maitri Patel from Surat, and 25-year-old Ayesha Aziz from Kashmir, are giving flight to the dreams of young girls in India.

But, what about the women in IAF? Are Indian Air Force careers a good option for Indian women and should more women join the Indian Air Force and become Indian Air Force pilots?

History Of Women In IAF

In the past, the Indian defence forces were known to be against the induction of women in combat roles and, till 1992, women could not join the Indian Armed Forces.

Today, Indian Air Force female pilots have distinguished themselves in battle. Netflix’s Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl tells the story of the only woman in the Indian Armed Forces who flew into war zones in the Kargil War.

Gunjan Saxena was one of two women Indian Air Force pilots - the other being Flight Lieutenant Srividya Rajan - who flew Indian Air Force helicopters during the Kargil War.

Despite the controversy over the movie’s depiction of the experience of women in the IAF, the Indian Armed Forces have come a long way.

Today, all wings of the Indian Armed Forces allow women in combat roles and combat supervisory roles and the Indian Air Force (IAF) inducts women in all roles, including combat and support roles.

Here is a shortlist of famous female pilots in the Indian Air Force along with their achievements that captured the imagination of young Indian women.
